Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affairs Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person scientific seminar entitled “Ameliorative Effects of Butein Compared to Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Each Against 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats,” delivered by Pharmacist Ruaa Adnan Mohamed, the MSc student at the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department.
The seminar aimed to demonstrate the protective and ameliorative roles of butein and omega-3 fatty acids against 5-fluorouracil-induced hepatotoxicity, with a focus on the underlying cellular and biochemical mechanisms.
The seminar included several topics, including an introduction to butein, its sources, and pharmacological activities; an overview of the hepatoprotective role of omega-3 fatty acids and their impact on cellular health; a discussion of recent research findings on the combined effects of these compounds in mitigating chemotherapy-induced toxicity; and a presentation of methods used to assess hepatotoxicity and related biomarkers.
The seminar concluded with an emphasis on the importance of scientific research in developing supportive strategies to reduce drug-induced toxicity, encouragement for researchers to investigate natural compounds and integrate them with conventional therapies to achieve better outcomes, and a call for enhanced collaboration among scientific disciplines to improve the quality of future studies.
